The Spine slowly opened his eyes and shielded them from a bright light. He was lying face up in the grounds as a gentle breeze sang through the mechanical trees and soft clouds drifted across the azure sky. He sat up, scanning his surroundings and wondered how he ended up in the Walter manor garden when he’d only just been in the zoo the last time he could recall.

“Must’ve blacked out again,” he muttered grumpily.

“Papa!”

Spine snapped his head up and looked in the direction of the voice.

“Papa!!”

“Junior!” Spine cried and scrambled forward to reach Junior as the tot ran up to him. He grabbed the child and span around holding him aloft, laughing with relief before pulling him into a close embrace.

“Oh Junior, I’m so glad you’re safe!”

“Papa…” Junior sniffled and buried his face in Spine’s shirt, shivering terribly.

“Shh, it’s okay. Papa’s got you now. You’re safe with me,” he planted several gentle kisses on the side of Juniors head and cheek-plates, running a hand through his synthetic black hair. The little bot continued to shake and wailed as if he were in pain.

“Junior!? What’s wrong?”

“It hurts, Papa… make it stop!”

Spine’s eyes widened. What on earth did Junior mean? He knelt down on the grass and held Junior in his lap.

“What hurts, Junior? Please tell me…”

He paused as Junior suddenly felt lighter.

“Papa!” Junior whined, terror spreading across his face, “Papa, what’s happening!?”

Spine immediately realised what was going on. Six’s prediction was coming true. He felt tears form in his eyes and held Junior closer.

“It’ll be alright, Junior,” he lied, hoping to calm down the child if only a little bit, “I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always be here.”

“Papa, I don’t want to go!”

Spine buried his face in Junior’s shoulder, holding him ever closer as the child slowly faded.

“I don’t want you to either. Please… please never forget how much I love you…”

“I love you Papa…” Junior sobbed.

Spine’s integrity left him completely as tears rolled down his face. He couldn’t believe it was happening. He stared ahead blankly, still holding onto Junior as he continued to fade.

“Please, please don’t leave me! JUNIOR!”

“PAPA!”

Junior vanished. Spine lurched forward with nothing to hold onto and clutched himself, sobbing uncontrollably, eyes shut tightly as oil spilled from his face onto the grass.

“NO! NO! NO!” he punched the cold hard ground repeatedly and felt himself wretch. It was unfair. Why did Junior have to leave?

He still heard Junior’s voice echo in the darkness as he hugged himself tightly. It would haunt him for as long as he lived.

‘Papa…’

Spine’s eyes snapped open as he released panicked puffs of steam from his lips. He wasn’t in the garden anymore – which confused him greatly. He was in his chamber, in bedclothes and carefully tucked into his red silk covers. He slowly eased himself upright onto his elbows as he felt tears form at his eyes again as the memory of losing Junior returned to him. He felt hollow.

He froze, feeling some weight on his lower legs. He gazed down towards his feet and noticed a small bundle of black fabric with Giraffe-o’s head poking out of the side. The Spine heaved a sigh, as a trail of oil crept down his face, thinking the Walters had returned Junior’s belongings whilst he was asleep. He couldn’t blame them. He didn’t want to be seen this way.

He went to move the pile when it twitched and pulled his hand back in shock. His eyes went wide when it whined quietly.

“H-hello?”

The pile continued to shift and whimper. He wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.

A little voice came from the pile of cloth.

“Papa?”

Spine’s shock instantly melted away as he shot forward to bundle the tot into a hug with an enormous smile, “Junior!”

“Papa!” Junior cried, holding Spine tightly.

‘It was just a dream!’ he thought to himself, continuing to smile widely in absolute relief.

“Papa, I was so scared you wouldn’t wake up! That they couldn’t fix you!” Junior sniffled.

Spine said nothing, holding Junior closer to his chest, not wanting to let go at all.

“Papa, you’re crying…” Spine nodded and wiped his face with a sleeve as he leaned back, “Why?”

“Because I’m happy.”

“But people cry when they’re sad! And you’re not sad, are you?”

“No, but I really thought I’d lost you for good. I couldn’t bear the thought of it.”

“But I’m here Papa,” Junior smiled sweetly and nuzzled Spine’s chest, “You don’t have to be sad anymore!”

Spine grinned widely and ran a hand over Junior’s head.

“I sure don’t.”

“Hey Papa?”

“Y-yes?”

“Can we watch some Westerns?”

Spine laughed.

“Sure thing, son.”
Ya know what? I'm not even sorry.

Junior's back! Or is he?
